Hello Storyteller is excited to continue with our next installment of the Traveling Lensbaby Project! We have several Lensbabies circulating around the globe. Our Hello Creatives are excited to use these lenses and share their unique art with our community. Our next submission is from the incredible Evy Mackland with the Lensbaby Sol 45!
“For years I have worked so hard to perfect and improve my photography. I wanted to nail the focus, achieve a sharp photo with great colour displaying good technical skills. Once you focus on all these aspects in photography it can take over. For me I ended up with a great image that I would disregard because it wasn’t technical correct. In the end it started to restrict me creatively, I spent so much time planning and perfecting I forgot to capture the moment.
A few years ago I purchased a Lensbaby Composter Pro with Edge 80 objective, I was however so caught up in not nailing the focus that I soon gave up using it and I had left it in a camera bag collecting dust for too long.
As a member of the Hello Creative community I had the opportunity to try Lensbaby Sol45 and whilst using the lens with purpose, once giving it a chance I fell in love both with the Sol45 and with Lensbaby in general. I had never really used manual focus a lot and once I spent time photographing with Sol45 I learnt to master manual focus and I simply love with the creative freedom it gave me. In some ways I felt as if I had been given wings and gifted creativity to let go and capture without the focus on the pin sharp images.
In comparison to the Composer Pro with Edge 80 the Sol 45 was easier to work with. The lens can be fixed which means you can focus on getting the focus right before playing with the tilt. The lens has a lovely sweet spot and bokeh blades for creative blur. All this in a lightweight body making it a dream to carry around on your camera. I tested the lens in various situation outdoor in overcast and full sun, indoor in low light and natural light. The blur and the bokeh you can produce with this lens is just amazing and I could not love it more.
The lensbaby Sol45 helped me break free from chasing perfection and fueled my creative soul. I can highly recommend a lensbaby and would love to own their complete product range. From personal experience I would recommend Sol 45 as a great entry level lens into the Lensbaby product range.”
Stay tuned for more Lensbaby adventures! We will continue to travel with the Sol 45, Burnside 35, Velvet 56 and Omni System!
