For our first feature, we are going to introduce you to the amazingly talented, Melissa Richard!
My journey into photography began after losing our home in a devastating wildfire in May 2016. After losing all of my precious memories, I started getting more family pictures done to try to replace the ones I had lost. My husband had an entry level DSLR, and suggested that I try to learn how to take the photographs I saw in my mind’s eye. In September of 2017 I finally decided I was going to learn how to use the camera. I brought it everywhere (and still do!). I devoted myself to learning the ins and outs of manual mode and enrolled in some online courses to assist my education, while developing my natural eye for composition and lighting. I now consider myself a light chaser, and a storyteller. I love capturing “real” moments, raw emotion and movement. I am passionate about capturing the magic and joy of childhood. I also enjoy encompassing nature. Photography has become my artistic outlet and food for the soul.
A year ago I was taking as many online lessons/courses as I could. I have taken a Photoshop course by Mickie Devries (learning PS was a game changer for me) I am still learning, there is so much to learn! I have taken a few breakouts from Click Photo School, and a few from the Unraveled Academy. After my vacation (that starts in 3 days!) I plan on diving into Holly Awwad’s “Capturing the Magic of Childhood, “Dare to be Wild” by Megan Boggs and Kristen Ryan’s “Authentically Creative” (just to name a few!)
I love the sense of community you get in the Hello Storyteller group. The acknowledgement and the encouragement that you get daily is so motivating. I love the bi-weekly features, and seeing all of the insane talent recognized. I have also signed up to me a Hello Storyteller member and love the monthly perks!
I have been trying to get in the frame more this year. I have been setting up the tripod and letting it capture myself with my family. They don’t always turn out to be spectacular (or in focus at times ha!) but I am learning to love all of the beautiful “oops”.
It’s no secret that am a little obsessed with silhouettes. There is just something so captivating about the storytelling, mystery, drama, mood, and emotion that comes with silhouette photography that really inspires me.
This is a self portrait with my family. I set up the tripod and the timer, and we had a crazy paint fight! I love that I was able to be in the frame, because I was there too! I have been trying to do this more lately to ensure I have captured some moments with myself and my little family.
We decided to go out and capture nature’s beauty (myself and my kids). I love this moment I caught of my daughter smelling the daisies. I even added a light overlay from Susan Brooksby (free if you sign up to be a Hello Storyteller member!) it was one of June’s perks 🙂
