Grab your tissues and brace yourselves, because the big day is just around the corner! That’s right, it’s almost time for our kiddos to head off to school! Get ready for an epic first day and freeze-frame your school-goers!
You’re either doing your best NOT to burst into tears (just like I was 5 years ago when my youngest started kindergarten) *sniff* OR you’re counting down the days until they head back and you can drink your coffee in silence and while it’s still warm (how I am feeling currently 🙂
Whether it’s with your iPhone or your DSLR, you should be ready to capture every magical moment of this milestone. But, let me tell you, there’s an art to snapping the perfect “First Day of School” photo – one that captures the true essence of this emotional roller coaster – and I give you ALL my tips and tricks in my mini course “Back to School”
Picture this: it’s a crisp, sunny morning. Your kids are sporting oversized backpacks and adorable smiles brimming with excitement and a dash of nervousness. Their tiny feet, clad in new shoes, shuffle towards the school gates, or bus stop, backpacks bobbing up and down. You watch with teary eyes as they bravely venture into this new chapter of their lives. cue the waterworks
But fear not, fellow parents, I’ve got some expert tips to ensure your photos do justice to this heartwarming moment! First up, let’s talk about the lighting. Early morning or late afternoon sunlight casts a magical glow, so keep an eye out for the best possible light to help tell the story of the first day.
Next, let’s add some personality! Encourage your kids to bring along their favorite school props. Whether it’s a superhero lunchbox or a quirky pencil case, let their personalities shine through the frames. These little touches will make your pictures pop with character and charm.
Now, it’s time for the candid shots. Capture those in-between moments when they think nobody’s watching – a reassuring hug from a new friend, a giggle at a secret joke, or even a determined face as they solve a tiny dilemma. These genuine snapshots will be the ones that transport you back to this bittersweet day for years to come.
Don’t forget about a few video clips! Make sure to get their little voices sharing their name and age and grade, and capture some candid moments as they’re getting ready. Being able to SEE your kids in action adds a whole new level to remembering this day.
