Our veins echo the patterns of rivers, branches, and root systems. We are not a part of Nature. We are Nature.” -Marysia Miernowska
In this course we will explore connecting with nature to reconnect with the “nature” of ourselves as Artists and as humans. We are inseparable from nature; it’s within us and without. So, combining elements of nature in self-portraiture gives us the opportunity to explore our connection with the natural world. At the same time, it facilitates the exploration of our own inner “nature” and our development as Artists. By learning to draw energy from the elements around us, we become more attuned to the beauty in both our environments and in ourselves.
You will learn to be resourceful and to take inspiration from the natural world. The truth is, you don’t need fancy gear to create emotive and soulful portraiture! In fact, by utilizing what nature offers you can create impactful portraiture that is steeped in authenticity and earthiness. Work that is wholly your own, but that also resonates with others. You will likely even learn a bit about yourself in the process!
In This Course You Will…
- Learn how the cyclical quality of the human spirit reflects that in nature. We will look to the seasons, the elements, and the moon phases to better understand ourselves and our connection with the Earth.
- Be introduced to the four main female archetypes and their associations with the natural world, as well as universal symbols in psychology, and learn about their role in effective and compelling storytelling.

Art on the Spiral
“The psyches and souls of women have their own cycles and seasons of doing and solitude, running and staying, being involved and being removed, questing and resting, creating and incubating, being of the world and returning to the soul-place.”
~Clarissa Pinkola Estés
This chapter of the Nature of Self Portraiture- Art on the Spiral is all about looking to nature for not only inspiration, but to garner a deeper understanding of our very own Souls.
