Whether you do formal posing or casual and candid lifestyle, it’s good to know the basics of maternity posing. Guided maternity posing will help to maximize visibility of the belly as well as keep the body shape flattering. Here is my Maternity Posing Guide, which can also be downloaded here!
When posing maternity clients it’s important to remind them to relax their bodies. Many times elbows and shoulders can get stiff and full of tension, and sometimes they’ll want to keep their wrists, hands, and fingers rigid in the pose. If needed, it may help to have them shrug and drop their shoulders several times or shake out their hands before resuming the pose.
Generally speaking, you want to keep a nice “S” shape – as illustrated in the following diagrams. To help create variety in your sessions, you can vary your posing direction. Having clients close their eyes, take deep breaths, and lift their chin, will create a deeper, more intimate image. Directing clients to laugh and shrug a shoulder in a sideways pose (like in pose #3 below) will create a fun, carefree image.
