It’s easy to fall into a rut, allowing the inspiration and motivation to be sucked right out of you. We’ve all been there, right? Want to know what I like to do during these times to jump start my creativity? I like to add a new addition to one of my personal photography projects. Let’s talk about Images Re-Imagined.
I have many ongoing series to choose from. But if you don’t have any photography projects started, an easy way to do this is to pick an old image and recreate it. I like to think of this exercise as re-imagining an image.
Dig through your old images and find one that stands out to you, whether it’s because of a sentimentality factor or because something about the image always bugged you, like it just isn’t quite right.
Once you pick your image, think about how you can recreate it. Will you shoot it as an exact replica, or will you be more creative in your approach? The goal of this exercise is to not only get you picking up your camera again, but to improve your skills in the process. Think how you can strengthen this new version of your photo. Maybe the composition was lacking. Or the light was flat. Maybe you can use a more unique perspective.
Now look at both photos, old and new, and study them. Are there aspects you like more about one image than the other? Were you able to improve the image? In what ways is the new version better?
Think of this assignment like redoing a school project for a better grade. When we consciously work to improve our skills, so much growth can be had.
This is a creative assignment straight from my p52 project through Hello Storyteller – 52 Clicks. I like these kinds of exercises because they force us to dig a bit deeper.
